Jesus says to look at someone with our eyes and lust for them leads to adultery in the heart. The greater righteousness Jesus teaches compels us to consider the condition of our heart. Lust, like anger, corrupts the heart leading one to adultery. To avoid temptation, Jesus urges us to “pluck out our eyes” if they cause offense. Or, to put it another way, we need to remove anything which tempts us.
