Why You Must Leave the Past Behind and Walk Worthy

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4)

A Call to Walk Worthy

In the early chapters of Ephesians, Paul reminds us of our unworthy state before Christ. We were once dead in trespasses and sins, following the course of the world and fulfilling the desires of the flesh. However, Ephesians 2 explains that God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive together with Christ. Now, as new creations, we are urged to walk worthy of the calling we have received. This transition from our old life to a new life in Christ is a central theme of the Christian walk and our daily spiritual conduct.

What It Means to Walk Worthy Daily

To walk worthy means leaving our old ways behind and living the way God intended. As stated in Ephesians 2, we are God’s workmanship, created for good works. This change in life requires us to abandon sin, as continuing in it is an unworthy way to live as a Christian. Paul emphasizes that our previous life—how we formerly lived or “once walked”—is over. By leaving sin behind, we honor the sacrifice of Jesus and demonstrate that we have truly been made new through His love, mercy, and grace in our lives.

Character Traits for Those Who Walk Worthy

There is another vital element to this calling involving our character and how we treat others. We must be lowly, which is another word for humble, and gentle, following the example of Christ’s own meekness. Additionally, we are called to be longsuffering—patient to a fault and slow to anger. We must also bear with our brethren in love, enduring disagreements for the sake of unity. This is the life God created for us to live. When we embody these traits, we truly walk worthy of our calling and keep the bond of peace.
