Baptism: What It Means and Why You Should Do It

The importance of Christian baptism is emphasized throughout the Bible and the teachings of Jesus. Jesus not only experienced baptism but also taught and commanded it. In Matthew 3, Jesus approached John the Baptist to be baptized, even though John initially objected. Jesus explained that it was necessary to fulfill all righteousness and obey His Father’s will. After His baptism, the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus, marking the start of His ministry.

Jesus also taught water baptism during His ministry. In John 4, we learn that His disciples baptized more people than John the Baptist, though Jesus Himself did not baptize anyone. This was likely to avoid creating divisions among His followers. However, the disciples baptized under His supervision, showing that baptism was an important practice in Jesus’ ministry.

The Importance of Christian Baptism: It Saves Us!

Jesus commanded baptism for salvation. In Mark 16:15-16, He instructed His apostles to preach the gospel to all creation, stating that belief and baptism lead to salvation. Baptism unites us with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Paul explains in Romans 6:3-4 that through baptism, we are buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life. Baptism is not just symbolic; it spiritually connects us to Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, transforming us into new creations.

Baptism also brings the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2:38, Peter instructed believers to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the Holy Spirit. This promise extends to everyone who obeys. Similarly, in John 3:5-6, Jesus told Nicodemus that one must be born of water and the Spirit to enter God’s kingdom. The Holy Spirit gives life and empowers Christians to walk in obedience.

Finally, Peter affirms in 1 Peter 3:21 that baptism saves us, not by cleansing the body but by appealing to God for a clean conscience through Jesus’ resurrection. Baptism is not a mere ritual; it is essential for salvation, just like faith and repentance.

If you believe in Jesus but have not been baptized, you are encouraged to follow His example. Through baptism, you will unite with His death and resurrection, receive the Holy Spirit, and secure your salvation.
