Baptism

What is Baptism?

In Christianity, baptism is a significant act of obedience, signaling the beginning of one’s relationship with Jesus. It includes repentance and receiving the Holy Spirit. The Bible tells us, “Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'” (Acts 2:38)This scripture shows that baptism is for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the Holy Spirit.

Why Get Baptized?

  1. To Follow Jesus’ Example: Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:13-17), and He instructed His followers, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). By getting baptized, Christians are following Jesus’ command.
  2. For Salvation: Jesus says baptism is necessary for salvation: “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16). Jesus teaches that believing in Him and being baptized are linked to salvation.
  3. To Join the Christian Community: When someone is baptized, they’re not only washing away sins but also becoming part of Christ’s body, the Church. “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body” (1 Corinthians 12:13), explains how baptism unites believers into one community.

How is Baptism Done?

  • Immersion: To “baptize” means to dip or submerge. All baptisms in the New Testament, including the baptism of Jesus, used full body immersion (Acts 8:38-39).
  • In the Name of Jesus: Baptism is performed in the name of Jesus Christ, acknowledging His authority and the forgiveness of sins (see Acts 2:38).

What Does Baptism Mean?

  • Death, Burial, and Resurrection: in baptism we die to sin, we are buried with Christ, and rise to a new life. “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).
  • Washing Away of Sins: Baptism is where sins are cleansed. “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16).

Who Should Be Baptized?

  • Believers: Baptism is for those who can understand and believe in Jesus, not for infants or young children who can’t make this decision (Acts 8:36-37).
  • Repentant Sinners: Before baptism, one should repent or turn away from sin (see Acts 2:38).

After Baptism

Baptism marks the beginning of a Christian life:

  • Live as a Christian: This involves living according to Jesus’ teachings, showing love, doing good deeds, and striving to avoid sin (Ephesians 4:1-3).
  • Engage with the Church: Participate in worship, study the Bible, and fellowship with other believers (Acts 2:42).
  • Grow in Faith: Continue learning about God, praying, and nurturing your relationship with Him (2 Peter 3:18).

Summary

Baptism in Christianity isn’t merely a ritual; it’s a profound commitment to a new way of life. In baptism, our sins are forgiven, we receive the Holy Spirit, and we become part of the Christian community.
