Jesus traveled to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, drawing crowds who came to hear his teachings. The Pharisees tested him with a question about the lawfulness of divorce. Jesus responded by referencing Moses’ commandment, which permitted divorce due to people’s hardened hearts. However, he emphasized God’s original design, where a man and woman become one flesh in marriage, and no man should separate what God has joined.
When asked again about divorce at home, Jesus asserted that anyone who divorces and remarries commits adultery. He also addressed the issue of children being brought to him. Despite the disciples’ rebukes, Jesus insisted that they not hinder children from coming to him. The kingdom of God belongs to such as these. He emphasized the necessity of receiving the kingdom of God with childlike faith.
As Jesus was preparing for a journey, a man approached him, seeking to know how to inherit eternal life. Jesus reminded him of the commandments. The man claimed to have kept all these commandments since his youth. Loving him, Jesus told him that he lacked one thing: to sell all he had, give to the poor, and follow Jesus.
